As a certified nursing assistant, you have many tasks to carry out for a patient. You can think of it as having multiple jobs instead of just one. A nursing assistant can work through people’s homes, hospitals or specific offices. Whichever setting one chooses, they will be carrying out the same functions anywhere they work as a can. The first job that they do is check vital signs. Vital signs are the essential health measures that are taken whenever you go to a hospital or a doctor’ office; even a yearly check up requires these. They include things such as temperature, blood pressure, etc. If there are any irregularities in the results then it would be the nursing assistant’s job to tell the doctor.
Another thing that a nursing aid would to would be to do the upkeep on a patient’s room. In addition to the procedures going on, they have to make sure that the room is organized and tidy at all times. There is always a janitor or a cleaning staff that does the actual cleaning of the room but the nursing assistant has to make sure that everything is tidy and put away. They also have to make sure that the patient is up on their hygiene and by doing that they have to make sure that everything is taken care of that they would normally be doing at home if they were to do it on their own. Things they would do include helping them shave, shower, and brush their teeth.
Patients will need to get around the hospital and you cannot just expect them to walk alone because they are in a hospital for a reason and you do not want to be responsible for them getting hurt while you are taking care of them. Another one of a nursing assistants job is to take patients where they need to go whether it is for physical training or if they need to go to the restroom. It is their job to make sure that they are watched wherever they go.
The other thing that they do is feed the patients. In certain cases, some people need more help than others. Some need to be helped and some people just need to be looked after. Sometimes the patients will go to a big cafeteria where everyone eats and the nurses just monitor everyone at the same time. This would happen in an old folks home setting or in a hospital, the nurse brings the food to the patient’s room. Being a nursing assistant requires a lot of work and training, but all of the things they do are necessary and it is a big help to the patients to have someone care for them.
